Here are some top sunrise locations in the park:

  1. Clingmans Dome: As the highest point in the park, Clingmans Dome offers a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. On clear mornings, you can even see up to 100 miles away. The observation tower is a prime spot for catching the first rays of sunlight.  [Google Maps]
  2. Oconaluftee Valley Overlook (Luftee Overlook): Located just before the entrance to the park near Cherokee, NC, this overlook provides a stunning view of the Oconaluftee Valley. The early morning fog that often settles in the valley adds to the ethereal beauty of sunrise here. [Google Maps]
  3. Morton Overlook: Situated along the Newfound Gap Road, Morton Overlook offers an expansive view of richly forested mountains. The changing colors of the sky during sunrise create a breathtaking contrast against the dark mountain silhouettes. [Google Maps]
  4. Cades Cove: While more popular for its wildlife viewing opportunities, Cades Cove is also a fantastic spot to catch the sunrise. The sun rising over the vast open meadows, with the backdrop of mountains, makes for a picturesque scene. [Google Maps]
  5. Newfound Gap: This is the lowest drivable pass in the park, and it offers sweeping vistas of both the Tennessee and North Carolina sides of the Smokies. The early morning light beautifully illuminates the mountain ridges. [Google Maps]
  6. Look Rock Tower: Located on the western edge of the park, Look Rock Tower offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding area. It’s particularly special as you can witness both sunrise and sunset from this vantage point. [Google Maps]
  7. Foothills Parkway: Specifically, the western section near Look Rock or the eastern section near Cosby, both offer multiple pull-offs and overlooks that provide sweeping views of the mountains, ideal for sunrise. [Google Maps]
  8. Mount LeConte: If you’re up for a serious hike, the summit of Mount LeConte or its cliff tops offer an unobstructed view of the sunrise. The hike is challenging, but the reward is worth it. [Google Maps]
