The Snapdragon flower, known scientifically as Antirrhinum, is distinguished by its vivid colors and unique shape, which resembles a dragon’s mouth that opens and closes when laterally squeezed. Traditionally, snapdragons symbolize grace under pressure and deception due to their ability to appear benign while possessing a hidden complexity—a perfect metaphor for the dual nature of human emotions.

In the context of my “Pictorial Whispers” project, the choice of white and pink snapdragons plays a significant role in conveying the themes of grief and resilience.

White Snapdragons: The color white traditionally symbolizes purity, innocence, and peace. In this new plate, white snapdragons represent grief’s silent, internal aspect—the calm and composed exterior that often masks the turmoil within. This color conveys a sense of quiet mourning and reflects the introspective side of dealing with loss, where emotions are held close and personal reflections run deep.

Pink Snapdragons: In contrast, pink is a color of warmth, care, and the enduring spirit of life. Pink snapdragons in this plate symbolizes the ongoing journey of living through grief. They represent the energy and strength required to continue daily life and face the world despite the pain of loss. This color highlights the resilience necessary to balance grief with the demands of the outside world, embodying the more visible aspects of coping and recovery.

The juxtaposition of these colors in the same frame—through the placement of white and pink snapdragons side by side—visually captures the duality of grief. This duality explores how I navigate my inner emotional reality while simultaneously engaging with life’s ongoing demands. The choice of these specific colors deepens the narrative of my Pictorial Whispers series, illustrating not only the contrasting emotions involved in grieving but also the complex, multifaceted nature of human resilience in the face of loss.

Through the unique rendering of colors in the wet plate collodion process, where these hues transform into various shades of gray and black, the emotional weight and depth of these symbols are further enhanced. This technique adds a timeless, ethereal quality to the images, making the snapdragons not just flowers in a photograph but profound symbols of the universal human experiences of loss and recovery.

Artist Story: Dual Realities

Where the whispers of the past meet the stirrings of the present, two snapdragon flowers — one white and one pink — share the frame, their proximity a deliberate choice to symbolize the complex duality of grief. This composition, part of the ongoing “Pictorial Whispers” series, aims to delve into the nuanced reality of living with loss, where sorrow and strength coexist in a delicate balance.

When photographed using wet plate collodion, the inherent qualities of white and pink undergo a profound transformation. The white snapdragon, symbolizing the internal, silent aspect of grief, renders as a luminous, almost ethereal presence on the plate. This brightness accentuates the purity and solemnity associated with the color white, enhancing its representation of quiet mourning and introspection. The glow of white in this plate speaks to the hidden depths of grief—those private, sacred spaces of pain and reflection that are often obscured from the outside world.

The pink snapdragon, on the other hand, tells a different part of the story of grief—the visible, outward-facing struggle and resilience. In the wet plate collodion process, pink does not retain its vibrancy but shifts towards a darker, more muted tone. This subtle shift is significant; it mirrors the transformation of personal energy required to continue day-to-day life in the wake of loss. The darker rendering of pink encapsulates the heaviness that accompanies this display of resilience, highlighting the strength and courage needed to face the world while bearing grief.

The unique rendering of these colors in the wet plate process is vital for my project because it visually and symbolically represents the duality of grief. The stark contrast between the ethereal white and the muted pink deepens the understanding of how these two aspects of grief coexist and interplay. This contrast in my new plate is not a portrayal of color but a deeper reflection of the complex emotional landscape of grief.

By capturing these colors and their transformations on metal plates using the 19th century historic wet plate collodion handmade process, my project embraces the nuanced reality of grieving—acknowledging both the visible struggles and the invisible burdens. Each plate becomes a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, immortalizing the delicate balance between enduring pain and moving forward. In this way, the unique qualities of the wet plate collodion process do not merely capture images; they capture emotions and stories, making them essential to the narrative of “Pictorial Whispers.”

This plate, therefore, is not merely an artistic expression but a profound reflection on the paradoxes we all live with. It offers a visual metaphor for the unseen struggles and the visible continuance that define our journey through loss and healing.
