Creating the Scene

On a tranquil morning, I used my vintage 100-year-old Graflex Large Format camera near Shawnee Creek, focusing on the serene and enduring presence of the old mare, the prominent figure in this scene.

Her friend, the blind mare, stands quietly in the background, her presence felt but not immediately recognizable. This composition highlights the old mare’s resilience and the quiet support of her companion.

The old mare has lived through many seasons, facing numerous challenges with unwavering strength. The blind mare, having endured her own hardships, including losing her foals and being rejected by her own herd, has found solace and companionship with the old mare. Despite their individual sufferings, their bond represents the silent strength and mutual support they provide each other. These two horses are often left behind as the main herd explores new areas, and even when the entire herd is together, as it was today, they are frequently off to the side and away from the main group.

For this exposure, I used my Ross London 17-inch telephoto lens, which allowed me to capture the intimate details of the scene while maintaining a respectful distance.

This lens provided a unique perspective, highlighting the strength and grace of the old mare and the quiet presence of her blind companion.

The gentle interplay of light and shadow, coupled with the natural beauty of the tall grass and river, creates a poignant backdrop for this intimate moment.

Metaphorical Connections

Resilience and Transformation:
The old mare stands as a symbol of resilience, having weathered countless storms and seasons. Her enduring presence in the scene reflects the transformative power of survival and the inner strength that comes from facing adversity. The blind mare’s presence, though subtle, underscores the quiet transformations that occur through enduring life’s challenges.

Hope and Rebirth:
Despite the hardships they have faced, the companionship of these two mares embodies hope and the promise of rebirth. Their bond and the serene setting of Shawnee Creek suggest a peaceful continuity and renewal, offering a metaphor for finding new beginnings after loss.

Connection and Solitude:
The scene captures a moment of solitude shared between the two horses, highlighting the deep connection that transcends physical presence. The old mare and the blind mare, though facing different struggles, find strength in their companionship. This reflects the importance of support and connection in the journey through grief and healing.

Legacy and Sacredness:
Grace in Solitude honors the legacy of these two remarkable horses. The old mare, with her steadfast presence, and the blind mare, with her quiet strength, symbolize the sacredness of life and memory. The print, captured in the permanence of platinum and palladium, serves as a timeless tribute to their enduring bond and the sacred cycles of nature.

Through Grace in Solitude, I invite viewers to reflect on their own experiences of suffering and resilience, to find strength in the face of adversity, and to connect with the deep, enduring bonds that support us through life’s challenges. This print is a visual narrative of hope, resilience, and the sacred connections that sustain us.
