Inspired by the transient beauty of flowers, the Floral Alchemy collection by Tim Layton transcends traditional botanical photography to create works of art that are deeply personal and universally resonant.

The Vision
Floral Alchemy seeks to reimagine how we see the natural world, transforming familiar floral forms into meditative, abstract compositions. These one-of-a-kind handmade prints invite you to pause, reflect, and connect with life’s ephemeral beauty in a way you have never considered before.
The collection is built on the rare 19th-century handmade calotype paper negative process, and the final vision is transformed into beautiful platinum and palladium fine art prints.
Artist Statement

Within the rich history of photography lies a rare and profound process—the handmade calotype paper negative—celebrated for revolutionizing how the world captured and shared images from the 1840s onward. Families could document their lives for the first time, and distant places were photographed and shared with people who might never have the chance to travel there.
Early practitioners, such as Col. Alexander Greenlaw, used the calotype process to create lasting records of significant historic sites. In the 1850s, Greenlaw photographed the ancient city of Hampi, producing the first photographic documentation of this historic society, which dates back to the 14th century. Remarkably, his work remained undiscovered until 1983—more than 130 years later—underscoring the calotype process’s enduring value and historical importance.
As one of the few artists in the world who has mastered this complex and ancient technique, I am captivated by its challenges and the one-of-a-kind imagery it produces. I use the same process as Greenlaw used in the 1850s in India.
For this collection, I combine the evocative qualities of calotype paper negatives with the timeless beauty of platinum and palladium printing to create an abstract floral still life that transcends the boundaries of traditional photography.
This collection reimagines flowers as intricate compositions of light, texture, and form, inviting you to discover beauty in each image’s organic and unrepeatable qualities. The subtle imperfections in each print reflect the artistry of the handmade process.

I apply my deep understanding of calotype and platinum/palladium chemistry to shape light and shadow, transforming petals, stems, and blossoms into abstract works of art that evoke emotion and invite contemplation.
With their silvery and warm tonal qualities, handmade platinum and palladium prints from the calotype paper negatives elevate the work to a timeless aesthetic, emphasizing the enduring relationship between nature and art.
Each piece is meticulously made using a pure analog 19th-century archival workflow utterly devoid of modern technology. Because of the creative process’s analog and handmade nature, no two prints are alike.
