Epson Perfection Scanner

Epson Perfection V-850 Pro Scanner - timlaytonfineart.com

The Epson Perfection flatbed scanner has long been a staple for hybrid photographers who love shooting film and need a reliable way to scan their negatives and slides. Known for its balance of quality, affordability, and versatility, the Perfection series—particularly models like the V600, V700, V750, and V850—has earned a loyal following among film photographers. Whether you’re digitizing 35mm, medium format, or even large format negatives, Epson Perfection scanners offer a dependable workflow that bridges the analog and digital worlds, making them a trusted tool for photographers who value both craft and convenience.

The Epson Perfection series delivers image quality that satisfies the needs of most serious photographers without the need for expensive, time-intensive, and costly high-resolution drum scans.

Speaking from personal experience, my Epson V850 consistently produces professional, gallery-quality 16×20 prints on my Epson P-800 printer. Using the Advanced Black & White Mode, I can create archival pigment ink prints with beautiful tonal range and depth. My scans of C-41 negatives and E-6 transparencies for color work produce stunning, vibrant prints that faithfully capture the original film’s character.

On this page, I aim to build the definitive resource for learning how to get the best results from your Epson Perfection scanner. I am documenting detailed workflows, comparing the top scanning software options (Epson Scan 2, VueScan, and SilverFast 9), and comparing dry and wet fluid mounting techniques. Additionally, I am comparing side-by-side scans from my Epson V850 and high-resolution digital camera scans using my Canon R5 45MP mirrorless camera and macro lens so that you can make informed decisions about the best scanning methods for your needs.

Status of Epson Perfection Scanners

There has been some confusion regarding the status of Epson’s Perfection series scanners, particularly the high-end models like the V850 and 13000XL. In early 2025, reports suggested that Epson discontinued these scanners due to challenges in sourcing CCD sensors. However, Epson officially denied these claims, stating that these products are not at the end of their life and continue to be recommended for film scanning.

They confirmed that both models are still being manufactured and are available for purchase, although inventory levels may vary. (Epson Discontinue High End Scanners! – Talk Photography, Epson Denies Claim That Its CCD Film Scanners Are Approaching …)

It’s worth noting that regional differences may exist. While Epson USA maintains that the scanners are still in production, there have been indications that Epson UK might be winding down sales of these CCD photo scanners. (Epson Denies Claim That Its CCD Film Scanners Are Approaching)

For those considering purchasing an Epson Perfection scanner, especially the V850, acting promptly is advisable, as availability may become limited depending on your region.
