I am building a focused body of work around the historic mills of the Ozarks.
These structures are part of the region’s memory: work, water, grain, timber, trade, and the people who shaped this place. Many of them are fragile. Some are fading from public memory. I want to photograph them with patience and make the final prints by hand in my darkroom.
I use silver gelatin paper negatives and make silver gelatin contact prints by hand. The subject and the process belong together: enduring structures rendered through an enduring photographic method.

Why This Project
- The mills are quiet witnesses to Ozark history. They were practical places, built for work, but they now carry something deeper: memory, loss, survival, and connection to place.
- This project is not about quick documentation. Each site requires field time, return visits, careful notes, and darkroom work. The goal is to create handmade photographs that honor the structure, the landscape, and the people who built and used these places.
Curatorial Statement
The Last Historic Mills of the Ozarks is a handmade photographic body of work by Tim Layton.
Each photograph begins in the field and is completed in the darkroom. I make silver gelatin paper negatives and use them to create contact prints on fiber-based silver gelatin paper. There are no digital negatives and no inkjet prints.
The finished prints are scarce handmade objects with field notes, process logs, and clear provenance. This work is made for collectors, historians, and institutions that value Ozark history, traditional photographic craft, and carefully made physical prints.
