A body of handmade photographs created from a single Ozarks window, exploring grief, memory, endurance, and the quiet traces that remain.
Each work begins as a handmade calotype paper negative and is contact printed as a salted-paper print using photographic processes rooted in photography’s earliest years.

About the Work
Made at a single vintage window in my Ozarks studio, Pictorial Whispers uses flowers, vessels, leaves, and other modest objects as carriers of memory. The window is both setting and threshold—a place where present light meets what remains of the past.
The work grows from grief, but it is not confined to grief. Each photograph considers absence, endurance, healing, and the quiet persistence of ordinary life. Objects are chosen not simply for how they look, but for the emotional weight they can carry. Their gestures, relationships, distance, and light become a visual language.
The handmade calotype negative and salted-paper print are essential to that language. Their softness, visible paper structure, imperfections, and subtle variations resist perfect description. The process allows the photograph to behave more like memory itself: physical yet uncertain, present yet incomplete.
These are not studies of flowers or traditional still lifes. They are photographs about what remains—and what it takes to continue.
Collecting Pictorial Whispers

Each Pictorial Whispers photograph exists first as a handmade object. The image begins as a calotype paper negative and is contact printed by hand as a salted-paper print. Subtle variations in tone, surface, coating, and paper are inherent to the process and make each impression distinct.
Each photograph is issued in a fixed edition of 5 numbered salted-paper prints + 1 Artist’s Proof.
The Artist’s Proof is retained in my archive. Once the five numbered prints have been completed, no additional prints will be made from that negative.
Each finished work includes:
- A signed and numbered salted-paper print
- Title and date of the work
- Process and edition information
- A unique inventory and provenance record
- A short written note providing context from the larger Pictorial Whispers project when appropriate
The original handmade calotype paper negative remains permanently in my archive and is not offered for sale.
Because each print is made individually by hand, no two artworks are completely identical. These differences are part of the physical character of the work rather than something to be removed.
Available works are released selectively as the project develops.
Pictorial Whispers — Portfolios
Windowlight Studies – 2026
Windowlight Studies explores the quiet emotional life of ordinary flowers and vessels illuminated by a single vintage window in my Ozarks studio. Through light, gesture, and the gradual transformation of natural forms, the photographs consider memory, presence, endurance, and the passage of time.

The Shape of Absence – 2027
The Shape of Absence considers what remains after loss and how absence can acquire a presence of its own. Using vessels, empty space, light, and restraint as a visual language, the photographs explore grief, endurance, healing, and the slow possibility of continuing forward.
Exhibitions & Recognition
Pictorial Whispers is an ongoing body of work. Selected exhibitions, juried selections, publications, and other recognition will be documented here as the project develops.
Follow the Work
I document the continuing development of Pictorial Whispers through my Darkroom Diary, including new photographs, darkroom work, project decisions, exhibition preparation, and reflections from the studio.
