In the heart of my latest photography project (Pictorial Whispers) lies a deeply personal narrative that intertwines the profound grief of losing my daughter, Abby, with the artistic exploration of nature’s serene counsel. This journey is about capturing images and immortalizing emotions and memories through the historic wet collodion process.
The Collodion Process: A Metaphor for Grief and Healing
The collodion process, a technique dating back to the 19th century, is central to my work. This hands-on, time-intensive method requires a meticulous approach, much like the journey through grief. Each step in the process, from coating the plate to developing the image, demands patience, precision, and presence – qualities that are also necessary for navigating the complexities of grief.
In this process, there’s a profound connection between the physical act of creating and the emotional process of healing. The collodion process is unpredictable; it often yields unexpected flaws and artifacts. These imperfections, rather than diminishing the work, add a unique character to each photograph. They symbolize the unpredictable nature of grief, where moments of clarity are often intermingled with periods of confusion and pain.
Nature and Pictorialism: Symbols of Strength and Solace
Drawing inspiration from the ethereal style of Pictorialism, my focus on trees and nature serves as symbols of strength and emotional solace. The Pictorialist approach, known for its soft, dreamlike quality, allows me to capture the delicate balance between the enduring presence of nature and the ephemeral quality of emotions. Trees, in their silent majesty, embody resilience and continuity, mirroring my own journey through the stages of grief.
Artistic Alchemy: From Collodion to Kallitype
The journey from the collodion process to the Kallitype printing method adds another layer of depth to my work. Rendered in monochrome and enhanced with platinum, palladium, or gold toning, these photographs go beyond traditional black and white imagery. The toning process not only adds richness and depth to the images but also symbolizes the transformation of grief into something beautiful and enduring. This alchemy of emotions into art is a tribute to Abby’s lasting memory.
A Journey of Emotional Depth
This collection offers more than just visual aesthetics. It is an invitation to partake in a journey of emotional depth, historical photographic techniques, and a deeply personal story. Each print, a handmade testament to love, loss, and healing, carries with it the essence of my journey and the enduring memory of Abby.
Through the historic wet collodion process, my photography project transcends the realm of visual art. It becomes a medium for healing, an expression of grief, and a celebration of life. It is a journey of turning sorrow into art, where each photograph is not just an image but a piece of my heart, a fragment of my story with Abby.
