Tim Jr. and I crafted new lens boards for my 1906 Graflex 5×7 Auto camera, and I captured the entire process in a video.

The 5×7 Graflex Auto is a remarkable piece of vintage equipment. It showcases just how advanced and enduring camera design was over a century ago. Despite its age, this camera remains both functional and inspiring, proving that great craftsmanship stands the test of time.

I seriously doubt photographers 120 years from now will be using the ultra-expensive digital cameras that are commonplace today. I suspect that most digital cameras have a lifespan of no more than 15 to 20 years at the very best, and even then, I think that is probably rare.

I also have a 5×7 Press version of this camera, which should be back from being serviced very soon.

I am using the 5×7 Auto for my Solitary Witnesses project. I have been waiting all year for fall and winter to arrive so I could start photographing the defoliated trees. I am mounting the Spencer Port-Land 6-inch F4.5 soft focus lens and the 8 3/4″ F4 Verito soft focus lens in this video. I do have the original lens that came with the camera, but it is very sharp and does not align with the narrative of my project. However, I use this lens when photographing the wild horses of Missouri for my Pictorial Whispers project.

I also have the 9-inch Spencer Port-Land lens, but it is at S.K. Grimes right now getting a new mounting flange made. I will breathe easier once it is back in my hands. Technically, the 5×7 Graflex Auto was never designed to use a wide-angle 6-inch lens, but I got the Spencer Port-Land to work. I was really happy because there are times when I need that wider perspective, and a standard lens is just too long.

Solitary Witnesses captures the metaphor of isolation and resilience through the lens of lone trees, standing as silent observers in a changing world. Using large and ultra large format calotype paper negatives, I explore these trees as symbols of endurance, strength, and solitude in a disconnected and fragmented society. Using handmade calotype paper negatives adds a powerful emotional layer, allowing me to express feelings beyond reality. Each calotype is an exclusive original that cannot be duplicated, making every piece a one-of-a-kind representation of my artistic vision. These unique works reflect themes of resilience and transformation, inviting viewers to contemplate their own experiences of isolation and connection while recognizing the quiet strength of standing alone amidst an ever-evolving landscape.
