Questions to Ask Yourself
What Do I Really Want Out of Life?
- What is my deepest desire, the thing that will bring fulfillment and purpose to my life? Am I clear about this, and am I actively pursuing it?
Am I Taking Meaningful Steps Toward This Desire?
- It’s easy to dream, but am I consistently moving toward what I truly want? What actions am I taking, or do I need to take, to align myself with my goals?
What Brings Me Happiness, Contentment, and Optimism?
- Identify the experiences, emotions, or activities that make me feel at peace and optimistic. How can I incorporate more of these into my life and my creative process?
What’s Blocking Me From Experiencing More of This?
- What internal or external obstacles are holding me back? How can I address or remove these barriers to fully embrace the things that make me happiest?
What’s the Most Exciting Thing I Can Do for Myself?
- What’s the boldest, most interesting move I can make for myself, creatively and personally? How can I follow this passion without fear of judgment or failure?
Different Doesn’t Mean Better, But It Also Doesn’t Mean Worse
- When creating something unique, it’s important to remember that being different isn’t inherently better or worse. It’s about creating something true to yourself.
Rick Rubin’s Advice on Moving Forward
- The Audience Comes Last: Rubin suggests focusing entirely on the creative process and putting the audience out of mind. The goal is to make something that feels authentic and meaningful to you.
- Create for Yourself First: The priority is to make the best art possible for yourself. While it’s nice if others enjoy it, the primary purpose is not to cater to an audience.
- Never Change the Art for Success: Don’t let the desire for success or external validation shape your work. True fulfillment comes from staying authentic to your vision, even if it doesn’t align with mainstream expectations.

- There’s nothing wrong with wanting success, but the key is to stay true to your creative process. Focus on creating art that satisfies you first, without the pressure of external success or acceptance.
