Unable to sleep or process the enormity of what had happened, I wandered into the quiet wilderness. I came upon a white mare standing protectively over her newborn foal, peacefully sleeping on the ground before her. A wave of chills swept over me, and at that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense that Abby was okay and that she was being watched over. From that day forward, I began to see Missouri’s wild horses through profoundly different eyes.
