Waiting at the Threshold is Plate 3 from my Pictorial Whispers series, a handmade body of work created with Le Gray waxed calotype paper negatives and traditional salt prints.

This image was made at the vintage window in my Ozarks studio using a whole plate large format camera and a 19th-century soft focus lens.

The scene is simple: a yellow rose, a dark vase, old glass, and uncertain light. But the emotional weight lives in what is not fully revealed.

This plate is about the quiet space between where grief has brought us and what life has not yet revealed. The rose is not fully open. The window becomes a threshold, with light suggesting hope while the dark space beside it carries the weight of grief pressing in. Nothing has resolved yet. Everything waits.

For me, this image holds the feeling of being suspended in the middle—still standing, but not yet ready to move forward.

On this day, I felt uncertain about the future. I was not collapsing, but I was not moving forward either. I felt suspended in the middle, waiting for something I could not yet see.

The yellow rose carries that feeling. It is emerging, but not fully open. It stands in a dark vase that will print as a heavy tonal base, holding the weight of uncertainty underneath it. The weathered window becomes a threshold between the present moment and what has not yet been revealed.

The window becomes a threshold, with light suggesting hope while the dark space beside it carries the weight of grief pressing in. Nothing has resolved yet. Everything waits.

Grief lives in the empty dark space behind the flower. Endurance remains in the rose still standing.

Process Note

Each Pictorial Whispers image begins as a handmade Le Gray waxed calotype paper negative. I prepare the paper by hand, expose it in a whole plate large format camera, develop it in the darkroom, and contact print it as a traditional salt print.

There is no digital capture, no AI, and no automated shortcut in the making of the original negative or print. The finished work carries the marks of paper, chemistry, light, time, and handwork.
