The Symbolism of Trees: Guardians of Memory and Emotion

In the realm of fine art, few subjects carry as profound a symbolic weight as trees—these towering, resilient beings that have long served as metaphors for life, growth, and survival.

In my “Pictorial Whispers” series, trees transcend their role as mere elements of the natural landscape to become central characters, each imbued with deep personal significance and emotional resonance.

I see trees as something more than just visual subjects. I view them as poignant symbols of memory, loss, and enduring love.

Why Trees?

The decision to focus on trees in “Pictorial Whispers” stems from their inherent qualities of strength and endurance, qualities that echo the emotional journey of grief and healing.

Trees stand the test of time; they weather the storms and seasons of life, much like the enduring memory of a lost loved one. In this series, each tree is a testament to the memory of my beloved daughter, Peanut, whose spirit seems feels like it is part of the landscape.

Trees, with their deep roots and sprawling branches, represent a physical and spiritual connection to the earth and the cycles of life and death. They are natural guardians of the past; their rings are a record of history, and each layer is a story of survival. In the context of my work, they symbolize the ongoing presence of my daughter’s spirit in the natural world—a presence both grounding and uplifting.

Observing Trees in the Field

When I am in the field, my approach to photographing trees is meditative and intentional. Each tree is carefully selected for its unique form, the way its branches stretch towards the sky, or how its roots spread across the earth. These physical attributes are not just aesthetic considerations but also reflect different aspects of human emotion and experience.

I follow my creative pillars to ensure I am on track and aligned with my narrative.

The process begins with a silent communion with the landscape. I observe the interplay of light and shadow, the textures of the bark, and the sway of the leaves in the breeze—all these elements inform how I will compose my story.

With its slow and deliberate methodology, the wet plate collodion process allows me to capture more than just the visual essence of these trees. It enables me to capture a mood, a moment of profound connection between my own emotional state and the subject before me.

The Technical and Artistic Process

The choice of the wet plate collodion process for capturing these images is pivotal. This historic photographic technique, known for its rich tonality and distinctive imperfections, adds an ethereal, almost otherworldly quality to my platinum-toned Kallitype prints.

The collodion’s spectral sensitivity particularly enhances how light interacts with the subjects, often transforming ordinary scenes into hauntingly beautiful echoes of the past. This quality is crucial in conveying the surreal, dream-like state of remembering a loved one.

Moreover, the physicality of preparing, exposing, and developing each plate mirrors the emotional labor of dealing with grief. Each step is a careful, thoughtful act, much like navigating the complex emotions of loss. The handmade aspect of each print ensures that no two images are exactly alike, each bearing the unique marks of their creation, much like our individual experiences of memory and mourning.

A Path Through Grief

“Pictorial Whispers” is more than a photography project; it is a sacred journey through the landscape of loss, where each tree photographed becomes a marker along the path of healing. These trees stand as silent witnesses to the storm of emotions within, yet also as symbols of resilience and hope.

Through this series, I seek to craft a visual homage to Abby’s memory and forge a space where grief is acknowledged and shared, where the beauty of the natural world offers a semblance of peace and healing.

Each tree helps me—and hopefully others—find a way through the unknown terrain of heartache toward recovery.
