The wild horses of Missouri’s Ozark Mountains are not just subjects in my Pictorial Whispers project; they are profound metaphors for the journey through grief, resilience, and healing.
These majestic creatures embody the untamed spirit, resilience, and freedom that reflect my emotional landscape as I navigate the loss of my daughter, Abby.
You can read my artist statement to understand the Pictorial Whispers project and the detailed article about my journey to create and finalize it. This will give you a comprehensive background on the project’s inspiration, significance, and emotional and technical processes.
In this article, I share the metaphors that form the narrative pillars of my Pictorial Whispers project.
Metaphors as Narrative Pillars

In Pictorial Whispers, the wild horses serve as powerful metaphors, each chosen to reflect a spectrum of emotions and experiences.
These metaphors enrich the narrative and offer viewers multiple lenses to understand and connect with the themes of memory, loss, and healing.
I have invested months into developing the narrative for the Pictorial Whispers project. It has been an emotional and difficult process, but I now have the platform and narrative to create my life’s most compelling and significant work.
The loss of any loved one, especially a child, is one of life’s greatest challenges. Unable to turn back time, my only choices are to move forward or remain paralyzed by grief. I am a fighter and a person of integrity, and Abby would expect me to move forward and find a way to honor her.
These metaphors are the pillars of my Pictorial Whispers project, guiding me through each step of my journey.
Since 2015, I have spent countless hours following and tracking the wild horses of Missouri. Now, this journey takes on a new, deeper significance for me.

Resilience
The wild horses’ ability to thrive in the harsh conditions of the Ozark Mountains mirrors my unwavering fortitude in the face of grief. Their presence through brutally hot summers and deadly cold winters symbolizes the strength required to persist through pain and adversity. Like these horses, I strive to find the strength to continue, even when the journey feels insurmountable.
Transformation
The process of transformation is central to my project, just as it is in the life of wild horses. From birth to adulthood, these horses undergo significant changes, mirroring the profound internal shifts that occur following a loss. This metamorphosis is not just physical but emotional and spiritual, marking a journey from sorrow to acceptance and rebirth.
Hope
Hope acts as a beacon in the darkest periods of grief, guiding me toward potential joy and brightness ahead. The wild horses, particularly the new foals born each spring, symbolize this hope. Their birth and growth represent renewal and the promise of a future filled with possibilities, even after devastating loss.
Solitude vs. Community
The wild horses’ behavior oscillates between solitary moments and strong communal bonds, reflecting the dynamic interplay between personal reflection and communal support in the healing process. While solitude allows for deep personal reflection, the support of a community provides necessary comfort and understanding. This balance is crucial in navigating grief.
Legacy
The enduring presence of wild horses in the Ozark Mountains captures the essence of legacy. Just as these horses have left a lasting impact on the landscape, Abby’s memory continues to influence my life. This legacy is about recognizing and honoring the lasting effects of those we have lost.
Connection
The deep, enduring bonds within wild horse herds highlight the connections that transcend physical presence. Despite Abby’s absence, the relationship I have with her continues to shape me, underscoring the notion that love and memory endure beyond separation.
Peace
Peace emanates from accepting loss and finding serenity in the altered landscape of life. Observing the wild horses in their natural habitat provides a sense of calm and acceptance, reminding me that peace is attainable even amidst profound grief.
Acceptance
Acceptance marks a turning point in the grieving journey. Witnessing the wild horses adapt to their environment and each other illustrates the possibility of accepting new realities post-loss. This acceptance is not about forgetting but integrating the loss into a new understanding of life.
Rebirth
Rebirth is symbolized by the arrival of new foals each spring, representing the emergence of a renewed self, shaped by experiences of grief but resilient and whole. This cycle of life and renewal offers a powerful metaphor for the journey of healing and transformation.
Sacredness
The sacredness of life and death is deeply honored in the presence of wild horses. Their existence, struggles, and triumphs encapsulate the reverence for the existential cycle. This sacredness reflects the profound sanctity of remembering and mourning Abby, acknowledging the deep reverence for her life and our shared experiences.
Conclusion
The wild horses of Missouri’s Ozark Mountains are not merely subjects in my Pictorial Whispers project; they are embodiments of resilience, transformation, hope, and the profound journey through grief. By capturing their essence, I aim to create a visual diary that resonates with universal themes of loss and recovery, offering solace and shared healing to all who engage with it. Through my work, I invite viewers to reflect on their own experiences of memory, loss, and healing, connecting deeply with the powerful metaphors that these wild horses represent.
